BCS predictions

The college football season is coming to an end. As a New Years gift from EB to you we have our last minute BCS picks to help you get in the holiday betting spirit.

ROSE – THE Ohio State U 31 Oregon 26 – I will be in attendance for an EB blog post to kickoff 2010 – I know Oregon will score points, but I figure they will get 4 FG’s in the red zone and the Bucks will get off the losing schnide behind a big day from the underrated 3 headed monster of Boom Herron, Zoom Saine and The Phenom – that’s right, I am breaking off nicknames and I am a HOMER!  Plus, Cam “Lil’ Ironhead” Heyward and the uber-talented OSU D-Line will dominate Oregon’s running game – I am also predicting Thad Gibson, aka Alpha Junk yard Dog of OSU, will coldcock knockout LaGarrette Blount after the game…SUGAR – The University of Flip Floppin’ Felons 37 Cincinnati 14 – I would break this game down, but I have close family members who will read this and the editors know I have a very weird relationship with the Gators.  No matter what is going on with Urban, this is Timmy Tebow’s last game and he will destroy the coach-less Bearcats.  The most entertaining part of this game will be the announcing booth, as Gary Danielson, Verne Lundquist, Bob Davie, Brent Musberger and Kirk Benedict Herbstreit will overtake Fox’s broadcast booth and perform a classic, old school death match for mic time and one last Tebow gush-fest.  We might have the first on-air marriage proposal between announcer and player.  My money is on Danielson…

FIESTA – Who cares – oh, sorry that’s not a option.  I guess I will go with Horned Frogs 37 Smurfs 33 – frankly this rivals the Louisville-Wake Forest Orange Bowl of a few years ago as the least possible interesting match-up in the history of the BCS.  This argument is for a different day, but mid-major programs don’t deserve to play in the BCS.  But if they do get in, isn’t it a requirement for us the viewing public to see what they can do against the big boys?  Isn’t the goal to see how they stack up, either like Hawaii against Georgia in the Sugar a few years back – expected Ace-whipping – or Boise-Oklahoma - an unexpected game of the century – I am not related to anyone associated with these 2 little brother so obviously I don’t care who wins and won’t watch…

ORANGE – see above paragraph, only replace it with 2 mid-BCS major teams.  I will go with the Big 10 Corneyes 27 Ramblin’ Wreck 20 – Iowa is good on D and has a month to prepare for the wishbone.

BCS TITLE GAME – Sabans 26 McCoys 17 – I want Texas to win to shut the annoying SEC up and deny them their 4th consecutive National Title but I just don’t see it.  Hopefully heisman winner Mark Ingram’s dad can see it in prison before he gets shanked in the shower by an Auburn fan.  Colt McCoy gets violated by the second big athletic DT in as many games as Mount Cody erupts in the backfield all day.  Colt does have a better than average place to “lick” his wounds though.

Winter Classic: Philadelphia at Boston
My favorite game of bowl season, the NHL’s Winter Classic which will be contested New Year’s Day at Fenway Park in Beantown. The Flyers have already changed coaches and had internal strife in their locker room while limping to a poor start that finds them 13th in the Eastern Conference. The Bruins have battled through injuries to forwards Marc Savard and Milan Lucic yet sit 5th in the Eastern Conference. In the first two editions of the game, the road team has been victorious however the trend is broken in 2010. Philadelphia’s suspect goaltending will catch up with them. Expect two goals from Boston’s Marco Sturm in a 5-2 Bruins win.

Rose Bowl- Oregon vs. Ohio State
Masoli > Pryor, especially when he has a partially torn PCL in his knee. That’s all you really need to know. Oregon running game just may be too much for the Buckeyes defense with both LeGarrette Blount and LaMichael James able to rack up yards. Ohio State has history on their side with a 7-0 record against the Ducks. Not this time, Gilly. Oregon wins 31-16.

Sugar Bowl- Florida vs. Cincinnati
The saga of both coaches Brian Kelly and Urban Meyer is sure to eat up a lot of headlines. The Bearcats have a potent offense and something to prove following their coaches defection. Cincinnati was very impressive in their comeback win over Pitt to win the Big East with special credit going to Mardy Gilyard. Simply put, Tim Tebow will not lose his last college football game. Jesus is on his side. Florida wins 42-30.

Fiesta Bowl- TCU vs. Boise State
I hate this game. Why not have a smaller school like one of these play against a larger school in an effort to prove they can compete? Oh yeah because that would make sense for the BCS to do that and people would approve, so that cannot happen. Even more, these two teams met in something called the Poinsettia Bowl last season and the Horned Frogs won 17-16. Why on earth are they playing again? TCU’s defense versus the Boise State offense is the big matchup. Without the blue turf, I say TCU wins 28-17.

Orange Bowl- Georgia Tech vs. Iowa
I’m not sure I can even fake much interest in this game. I feel like most of emptybackfield’s staff when I talk about hockey’s World Junior Championships. Ricky Stanzi or James Vandenberg are both competent enough to pilot the Hawkeye offense. Iowa’s excellent defense will be hard pressed to stop Jonathan Dwyer, Yellow Jackets talented tailback. I’m playing the hunch and saying Iowa wins 23-14.

BCS National Title Game- Texas vs. Alabama
Colt McCoy and the Longhorns have played a fairly light schedule and struggled to beat Oklahoma and Nebraska, the two best teams they played. Heisman winners have had a rough go of it in championship games in recent history so Mark Ingram may need some help from the rest of the Alabama offense especially with Texas’ top ranked run defense which allows a paltry 62.9 yards per game. The Crimson Tide dominated in the trenches against high level opponents like Florida lead by Rolando McClain and Mt. Cody himself, Terrance Cody. Quarterback. In a big game, I would rather have “Tricky” Nick Saban than Mack Brown Alabama wins 34-20.

Fiesta Bowl - TCU vs. Boise State
The game that I probably am least interested in because face it, we don’t really learn anything from it. I want to see the little guys duke it out with the big boys to see if either of these teams can really hang. But on the other hand it’s the battle of the undefeateds and should be a good one. I think this is a good match up for TCU who has one of the more stout running defenses in the country going up against Boise’s tandem running backs Jeremy Avery and Doug Martin.  TCU wins 35-14.

Sugar Bowl - Cincy vs. Florida
This game has more drama then any non title game I can remember in a long time. Urban Meyer’s health and leave of absence, Kelly heading to ND, and of course Teblow’s last game. with Cincy not having Kelly and all the emotions the Gators will have with Tebow and Meyer leaving I see this one being a blood bath. I will be curious how Gillyard does against that “SEC speed”. Gators roll 47-10.

Orange Bowl - Iowa vs. Georgia Tech
Could there be any worst match up? This one is going to be a low scoring snooze fest. You have the triple option going up against a big front seven of Iowa. Look for Iowa to control both lines of scrimmage and force young QB Nesbitt into making some turnovers. Iowa wins 17-7.

Rose Bowl - OSU vs. Oregon
I will be honest, i was close to jumping on the Oregon band wagon and then I remembered one thing. They play in the PAC-10. If this bowl season has shown us anything its that the PAC-10 was extremely overrated and the only reason it was competitive is because SC had a down year. Oregon will try and spread the field and use Masoli and James to run the ball. If Ohio State can not over pursue they will handle the Oregon offense just fine and get OSU the win. OSU wins 21-10.

BCS National Championship - Texas vs. Alabama
There are stars on both sides of the ball for this one with Colt, Ingram, Shipley, McClain, and Cody. On paper Alabama has the clear cut advantage and after seeing how Nebraska man handled Texas on the defensive side of the ball you would think Bama will do the same. Only thing that bothers me is that EVERYONE has written Texas off. You have a month of people telling you that you don’t deserve to be in the big game and that you have no chance and you are going to get one mighty chip on your shoulder. Expect Mac Brown to play up the “us versus the world” mentality to fire up his team and making it a game. Will it be enough to beat Bama? I don’t think so, but I expect Colt to make some big plays and keep it close. Bama wins 27-21.
